The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced significant changes to the Legal Studies subject for classes 11 and 12 to make it more relevant. Following the governing body’s approval in June 2025, students will now learn about key legal reforms such as the Triple Talaq law, Indian Judicial Code (BNS), Indian Civil Protection Code (BNSS), Indian Evidence Act (BSA), the abolition of sedition law, and the removal of Section 377.
These updates will replace outdated colonial-era laws with new provisions, include recent landmark Supreme Court judgments, and incorporate modern legal principles. This revision aligns with the comprehensive legal reforms carried out in 2023-24, which entirely overhauled the IPC, CrPC, and the Indian Evidence Act. CBSE will collaborate with an expert committee and a content development agency to implement the new syllabus starting from the 2026-27 session.
Legal Studies, introduced in Class 11 in 2013 and Class 12 in 2014, has gained popularity among students pursuing careers in law, public policy, and administration. Additionally, professional courses like Taxation and Financial Markets Management will be updated in collaboration with ICAI and NSE, aiming to be ready by November 2025.

Meanwhile, CBSE has declared that Class 10 and 12 students must achieve at least 75 per cent attendance to qualify for the board examinations in 2026. A 25 per cent relaxation is available for students dealing with medical emergencies, participating in national or international sports events, or other serious reasons.
According to the official notice, students must submit supporting documents or records in such instances. Any student taking leave for medical or other reasons must apply to the school with proper documentation at the time of leave. Leave without a written request will be treated as unauthorised absence. Schools are required to regularly monitor and maintain accurate attendance records, the board stated. Attendance registers must be updated daily and signed by the class teacher and the school’s competent authority.
